This physical theatre training is focused on the intersections between movement/dance and writing/text.
Movement and writing can both be understood as expressive gestures, giving shape to our individual and collective inner worlds through different means. Here, we understand them also as two related forms of listening. The work then, is to practice leaning in close, listening to this thing that is asking to be expressed through us - as words, spoken or on paper; or through movement in the space. In this understanding, the act of creation is always collaborative; it is an act of participation.
In these sessions we investigate how these different channels of expression can speak to each other: How can we turn a text into movement? A choreography into words? How we can move through our writing and write through our moving? How can we make the words dance and they us?
Together, we will explore exercises in improvisation and instant composition from different traditions of physical theatre and contemporary dance. We will strive to be absurd, playful, and sometimes comical, but also train to recognize beauty and truth when they come. The sessions will be very physical. We will move and then stop to write - and the other way around. We will write while watching others move. We will move while others speak, or do both at the same time. We will listen to each other, give feedback and practice discernment, always asking: What works; and why?
The class is open to all levels. Please bring clothes to move in, a notebook, and arrive a bit early, so we can start together and on time
